  68. MACHINE REQUIREMENTS

  71.         To run this demo, you need a machine with at least
  72.          - a 386sx CPU; 486 or faster recommended
  73.          - a VGA card; VLB or PCI recommended
  74.          - a disk drive; hard disk recommended
  75.          - a soundcard if you want music; GUS recommended
  76.          - 1 MB of free high memory; 2 MB recommended
  77.          - 450 kB of free base memory

  81. WHY THIS RE-RELEASE
  82. ───────────────────┘

  84.         1) Shortly after releasing the original version we discovered that
  85.         the demo will hang if the machine is too fast, such as a P90. The
  86.         bug was trivial, but it never occurred during our beta testing, as
  87.         we had no access to a computer faster than a 486/66 back then. The
  88.         bug is now fixed.
  89.  
  90.         2) Hate to admit it, but SoundBlaster(tm) is the de facto standard
  91.         outside the demo scene, and thus should be supported. We didn't
  92.         have a SoundBlaster driver ready for our new sound system at the
  93.         time we released the original version, nor did we want to hold the
  94.         demo back any longer, so we decided to drop the SB support and be
  95.         done with it. Later, after discovering the Pentium bug, we thought
  96.         that a re-release with SB/SBPro support might not be a bad idea.

  98.         3) The original version required a 512k GUS to play the music; we
  99.         managed to squeeze the sounds so that an off-the-shelf 256k GUS
  100.         now works fine.

  102.         4) Software volume control has been asked for, and we decided to 
  103.         add it as a bonus feature: keypad - to decrease the volume, + to 
  104.         increase.
  105.  
  106.         5) Added command line option '!' for "no questions asked" mode; the
  107.         soundcard is autodetected and no confirmation is needed. This allows
  108.         to make a simple batch file to loop the demo over and over again.

  110.         6) The demo now works under QEMM7 and QDPMI.

  114. TROUBLESHOOTING
  115. ───────────────┘
  116.  
  117.         If the demo does not work, try removing all extended memory managers
  118.         (QEMM, EMM386), and use HIMEM only. A completely clean boot could be
  119.         a solution, too. Functionality under OS/2, Windows or similar is not
  120.         guaranteed in any way; the demo is designed to be run under MS-DOS.
  121.         If everything else fails, try the NoSound-option with a clean boot;
  122.         the music player is the main cause of incompatibility in almost any
  123.         demo, probably including this one.
